Mucocele

A mucocele is a benign lesion that appears as a small sac or bump filled with mucus, most frequently on the lining of the mouth, especially on the lower lip.

How it shows up: It usually looks like a soft, translucent or bluish bump that may grow, drain, and form again; it generally does not cause pain.

Common causes: It is often related to a salivary gland that has become blocked or injured, for example after repeatedly biting the lip.

Which specialist treats it? The dentist performs the initial evaluation, and depending on the case the maxillofacial surgeon or the oral pathologist gets involved. If you notice a persistent bump inside your mouth, it's a good idea to show it to an oral health professional.
