Renal Papillary Necrosis
Renal papillary necrosis, or necrosis of the renal papillae, is the death of tissue in the papillae, an internal region of the kidney through which urine passes into the urinary tract. This damage can alter kidney function.
Common causes: it is usually related to conditions that reduce blood flow to that region of the kidney or to certain underlying diseases that predispose to it.
Signs to watch for: blood in the urine, pain in the flank or lower back, and other urinary changes.
Which specialists treat it? Nephrology, including pediatric nephrology, and urology are the areas that evaluate this type of kidney involvement and guide the workup. In the case of blood in the urine or persistent lower back pain, it is advisable to have a professional assess its cause.
