Acute Allergic Interstitial Nephritis

Acute allergic interstitial nephritis is an inflammation of the tissue that surrounds the small ducts of the kidney, triggered by a hypersensitivity reaction of the body, frequently to certain medications or substances. It can temporarily alter kidney function.

Possible signs: a decrease in the amount of urine, swelling, fatigue, fever or skin rashes that appear along with the kidney problem.

When to seek care? In the face of noticeable changes in the urine, swelling or general malaise that coincide with the recent use of a medication.

Which specialist treats it? The nephrologist, and the pediatric nephrologist in children, are the ones who evaluate the kidney and identify the trigger. A timely evaluation helps protect kidney function.
