Lipoid Nephrosis
Lipoid nephrosis, also called minimal change disease, is a kidney disorder that causes significant loss of protein through the urine and is a common cause of nephrotic syndrome, especially in childhood.
Common symptoms:
- Swelling in the eyelids, legs, or abdomen
- Urine with a foamy appearance
- Weight gain due to fluid retention
Common causes: In many cases no clear trigger is identified; sometimes it is associated with infections or with an altered response of the immune system.
Who to see? The nephrologist, and in children the pediatric nephrologist, is the right one to study kidney function and protein loss. If you notice unexplained swelling or foamy urine, it is best to have it evaluated by this specialist soon.
