Peripheral Neuritis

Peripheral neuritis is inflammation or involvement of one or more peripheral nerves, that is, those that connect the central nervous system with the rest of the body. This condition can alter sensation, movement, or both in the area that depends on the affected nerve.

Common symptoms:

• tingling, burning, or numbness
• pain that follows the path of a nerve
• weakness or localized loss of strength

Common causes: infections, trauma, compression of a nerve, metabolic disorders, or exposure to certain substances.

The neurologist is in charge of studying peripheral neuritis; the general practitioner can provide the first guidance and, in an acute or very intense case, the emergency physician provides initial care.
