Red Eye

Red eye is a sign, not a disease in itself, that indicates redness of the eye surface due to dilation of the blood vessels. It can be due to mild and passing causes or to conditions that require attention.

Common causes: irritation, allergies, dryness, infections, or contact with foreign bodies.

Symptoms that may accompany it: burning, tearing, a gritty sensation, discharge, or sensitivity to light.

When to seek care? If the redness is accompanied by severe pain, changes in vision, or does not improve, the prudent thing is to have it evaluated. The ophthalmologist is the professional to examine the eye and identify the source of the redness.
