Secondary Parkinsonism

Secondary parkinsonism groups together a set of symptoms similar to those of Parkinson's, but caused by an identifiable cause distinct from Parkinson's disease itself, such as certain medications, vascular changes, or other conditions of the brain.

Features that are described: slowness of movement, muscle stiffness, tremor, and changes in gait or balance.

Key difference: unlike classic Parkinson's, here the symptoms are linked to an external factor or another condition, which makes it especially important to recognize their origin.

Who evaluates it? The neurologist is the professional who studies movement disorders, and in certain situations the neurosurgeon may take part in the evaluation. If these changes in mobility are noticed, discussing them with one of these specialists helps understand the cause and receive appropriate guidance.
