Adult Polymyositis

Adult polymyositis is an inflammatory disease of the muscles in which the immune system attacks the muscle tissue, causing progressive weakness. It is part of the inflammatory myopathies and mainly affects the muscles closer to the trunk.

Common symptoms: weakness when climbing stairs, getting up from a chair, combing your hair, or raising your arms, along with fatigue and, at times, muscle pain.

Which specialist treats it? The rheumatologist is the doctor of reference for polymyositis; the internist also takes part in its study and in coordinating with other areas when necessary.
