Aortic Valve Prolapse

Aortic valve prolapse describes the abnormal displacement or bulging of the leaflets of the aortic valve, the structure that controls the passage of blood from the heart to the rest of the body. When the leaflets do not close properly, blood flow can be altered.

Common symptoms: In many cases it causes no discomfort and is detected on routine studies; at other times it may be accompanied by fatigue, a sensation of palpitations, or shortness of breath on exertion.

Common causes: It is usually related to abnormalities of the valve tissue, congenital conditions, or structural changes of the heart over time.

Which specialist treats it? Its evaluation falls to the cardiologist, and in minors to the pediatric cardiologist; when the blood vessels are affected, the vascular surgeon may also take part. If you notice cardiac symptoms or were told about a murmur, it is advisable to schedule an evaluation with one of these professionals.
