Quinsy
Quinsy, known in Spanish as peritonsillar abscess, is a collection of pus that forms in the tissues surrounding one of the tonsils, usually as a complication of a throat infection.
Common symptoms: It usually presents with intense throat pain, almost always more marked on one side, difficulty or pain when swallowing, fever, and, at times, changes in the voice or discomfort when opening the mouth.
Common causes: It frequently appears after a case of tonsillitis that does not resolve, when the infection spreads to the neighboring tissues.
Which specialist treats it? The evaluation is handled by the otolaryngologist, who examines the throat and advises on the most appropriate management. In the case of very severe throat pain on one side accompanied by fever, the prudent thing is to seek medical care without delay.
