Fifth Disease

Fifth disease, also called erythema infectiosum, is a viral infection common in childhood that is recognized by a characteristic redness on the cheeks.

Common symptoms: It usually starts with a mild cold-like illness, followed by redness on the face with a slapped-cheek appearance and, later, a rash on the arms and trunk.

Common causes: It is caused by a virus that spreads through the respiratory tract and close contact between people.

Which specialist treats it? The pediatrician is the point of reference for children, with support from the dermatologist when there are questions about the rash and from the neonatologist in the youngest ones. When a rash raises questions, it is best to consult a professional.
