Vaginal Cysts

Vaginal cysts are closed sacs that form in the wall of the vagina and usually contain fluid, air, or semisolid material. In most cases they are benign, small in size, and do not represent a significant health problem.

How they present: They frequently cause no symptoms and are detected during a routine gynecologic exam; when they grow, they may cause a sensation of a lump, pressure, discomfort, or difficulty during certain everyday activities.

Common causes: They may originate from blocked glands, an accumulation of secretions, or tissue remnants present since development, among other factors.

Who to consult? The gynecologist is the specialist who examines and follows up on these cysts; when needed, the general surgeon is also involved. If you notice a lump or discomfort in the vaginal area, a gynecologic evaluation allows you to clarify what it is and guide you with peace of mind.
