Vesicoureteral Reflux
Vesicoureteral reflux is the abnormal passage of urine from the bladder back toward the ureters and, at times, toward the kidneys, in the opposite direction to the usual flow.
Why it occurs: It is usually related to an alteration in the mechanism that closes the junction between the ureter and the bladder; in children it may be present from birth or appear after repeated urinary infections.
Signs to watch for: Frequent urinary infections, fever without an apparent cause, pain when urinating, or discomfort in the lower back area may prompt an evaluation.
Who treats it? The urologist and the pediatric urologist evaluate this condition, with support from the pediatrician and the nephrologist when there is renal impact. If you notice these signs in a child, consulting a professional allows for the appropriate workup to be guided.
