Aortic Regurgitation
Aortic regurgitation is a disorder of the heart's aortic valve in which it does not close completely, allowing part of the blood to flow back into the left ventricle instead of moving forward toward the body. This forces the heart to work harder.
Common symptoms: it can go unnoticed for a long time; as it progresses, fatigue, shortness of breath, palpitations, or a sensation of a strong heartbeat in the chest may appear.
Common causes: it is related to disorders of the valve itself or of the aortic root, whether congenital or acquired over time.
Which specialist treats it? Its evaluation corresponds to the cardiologist; when it presents in childhood the pediatric cardiologist is involved, and the vascular surgeon takes part in the study of the aorta. If a murmur or chest discomfort is detected, a cardiology evaluation is worthwhile.
