Cystic Kidneys

Cystic kidneys are those in which cysts, that is, fluid-filled sacs, form within the kidney tissue. They can be isolated, benign findings or part of hereditary diseases that affect the function of both kidneys.

How they are detected: They are often discovered on imaging studies done for other reasons; when they cause discomfort, they may present with lower back pain, elevated blood pressure, or blood in the urine.

When is it advisable to study them? In the case of a family history of kidney disease or the finding of cysts on an ultrasound.

Which specialist assesses them? The nephrologist evaluates cystic kidneys in adults and the pediatric nephrologist in children, with support from the internist. Discussing the findings with these professionals helps define the most suitable follow-up.
