Pseudohermaphroditism

Pseudohermaphroditism is a term used to describe certain disorders of sexual development in which the external genital organs do not fully correspond with the internal characteristics or with the chromosomal sex. It is part of the differences of sexual development.

Possible manifestations: genitals with an ambiguous appearance or that do not match what is expected, sometimes identified at birth and in other cases during puberty due to hormonal changes.

When is it evaluated? It is usually studied when atypical genital characteristics or unusual pubertal development are observed, which warrants a comprehensive evaluation.

Which specialist treats it? It requires a joint approach among the gynecologist, the urologist, and the plastic surgeon for the physical aspects, with support from the psychologist on the emotional level. When there are doubts about sexual development, a comprehensive and respectful evaluation is the best path.
