Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome, also called complex regional pain syndrome, is characterized by persistent and disproportionate pain, almost always in a limb, that frequently arises after an injury or surgery. It is accompanied by changes in the skin and mobility.

Common symptoms:

• Intense, continuous pain in the affected area
• Changes in color, temperature, or sweating of the skin
• Swelling and difficulty moving the limb

When to seek care? If after an injury the pain persists longer than expected or is accompanied by these changes, an evaluation is worthwhile.
