Martin-Bell Syndrome (Fragile X Syndrome)

Martin-Bell syndrome, also called fragile X syndrome, is a hereditary genetic condition that is one of the common causes of inherited intellectual disability, especially in males.

How it may manifest: It is associated with varying degrees of learning difficulties, delay in language development, behavioral abnormalities and, at times, particular physical features.

When is an evaluation advisable? When developmental delays, communication difficulties, or a family history of intellectual disability are observed, it is helpful to seek early guidance.

The approach is usually a team effort: the pediatrician coordinates the follow-up, while the speech therapist supports language, the physical therapist supports motor development, and the psychologist supports the behavioral and learning aspects. Supporting the child's development with these professionals makes it possible to design appropriate supports for each stage.
