Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome

In a twin pregnancy in which the twins share the same placenta, twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome can occur. It is a complication in which blood flow between the twins is distributed unevenly through the vessels they share in the placenta.

Which specialist treats it? The gynecologist in charge of the pregnancy performs the monitoring; the cardiologist and the pediatric cardiologist, along with the pediatrician, may take part in assessing the well-being of the babies.

How it is identified: it is usually detected through the follow-up studies of a twin pregnancy, which is why prenatal care takes on special importance.

When to seek care? In multiple pregnancies it is a good idea to keep close follow-up; with any concern, discussing it with the medical team allows for timely monitoring.
