Thrombasthenia

Thrombasthenia is a platelet disorder in which the platelets, although present in normal numbers, do not work properly to stop bleeding.

Origin of the problem: In its classic form it has an inherited component that affects the platelets' ability to clump together and form the plug that helps close a wound.

Common symptoms: A tendency to bruise, bleeding from the gums or nose, and bleeding that lasts longer than usual after cuts or procedures.

When to see a doctor? If bleeding is frequent or hard to control, an evaluation is advisable. The hematologist is the professional who studies how platelets work and can clarify the source of the problem.
