Common Ventricle

Common ventricle is a congenital heart condition in which the heart does not fully separate its two lower chambers, so that blood mixes in a single pumping chamber. It is an abnormality present from birth.

What is it? Instead of two independent ventricles, there is a single or nearly single chamber, which changes the way blood with and without oxygen circulates to the lungs and the body.

Possible manifestations: Bluish coloring, rapid breathing, fatigue while feeding, and difficulty gaining weight in the infant.

Which specialist handles it? The pediatric cardiologist studies this condition, in coordination with the pediatrician. If a baby shows signs such as cyanosis or tiredness while feeding, the sensible thing is to seek a professional evaluation to define the appropriate follow-up.
