Proximal renal tubular acidosis, also called type II, is a disorder in which the kidney loses its ability to reabsorb bicarbonate in the first portion of the tubules, causing the blood to become more acidic than normal.

Why does it occur? It can appear in isolation or be associated with other disorders of the renal tubule, hereditary disorders, or certain systemic diseases that affect kidney function.

Possible manifestations: In childhood it is usually noticed through slower-than-expected growth, muscle weakness, thirst, and increased urine volume; the presentation varies greatly from one person to another.

Who treats it? Its study falls to the nephrologist, and in minors to the pediatric nephrologist. If this condition is suspected in a child or adult, it is advisable to seek a specialized evaluation to confirm the origin of the imbalance.
