Ankyloglossia

Ankyloglossia, popularly known as "tongue-tie," is a condition present from birth in which the band of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth is shorter or thicker than usual, limiting the movement of the tongue.

Possible effects: In babies it can make feeding difficult; later, it may influence certain speech sounds or oral hygiene, although it does not always cause problems.

When to have it checked? If difficulties are observed with breastfeeding, with moving the tongue, or with pronouncing.

Which specialist evaluates it? The dentist and the pediatric dentist usually detect it, while the maxillofacial surgeon or the pediatric surgeon evaluate the cases that require more detailed attention. Discussing it with one of these professionals helps decide the appropriate follow-up.
