Duodenal Atresia
Duodenal atresia is a congenital defect in which the duodenum—the first portion of the small intestine—is narrowed or closed, which prevents the normal passage of digestive contents in the newborn.
When is it detected? It is frequently suspected before birth in prenatal studies and usually manifests in the first hours of life with vomiting, sometimes greenish in color.
Common symptoms: Early vomiting, abdominal distension in the upper part, and difficulty feeding.
Which specialist treats it? The pediatric surgeon is the one who assesses and treats this condition, with the support of the pediatrician and, during pregnancy, the obstetrician-gynecologist. If a newborn has persistent vomiting or does not tolerate food, they should be evaluated immediately by medical personnel.
