Ketoacidosis

Ketoacidosis is a serious complication that occurs when the body, faced with a lack of usable energy, produces large amounts of acids called ketone bodies that disrupt the balance of the blood. It is frequently associated with uncontrolled diabetes.

Common symptoms: Intense thirst, heavy urination, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing, fruity-smelling breath, and drowsiness.

When to see the doctor? It is a situation that requires immediate care; with these signs, especially in a person with diabetes, it is advisable to seek medical help without delay.

Which specialist treats it? Acute management usually begins in the emergency room and, depending on the case, in intensive care, with later follow-up by the endocrinologist and the internist. Because of its potential severity, it should not be managed at home: the priority is evaluation by a professional.
