What does an intensivist do?

They oversee breathing, circulation, and the body's balance with the support of monitors, ventilators, and medications. Their job is to stabilize the patient and prevent complications while the underlying cause is treated.

Situations they treat

Among the conditions that reach intensive care are septic shock, heart attack, and decompensated heart failure. They also manage metabolic emergencies such as diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar coma, as well as ventilator-associated pneumonia and severe anemias.

When is it needed?

When an acute condition compromises one or more organs and the person needs support that can only be provided in a specialized hospital setting.
