Cystitis in Children

When a child has discomfort when urinating or changes in their urinary habits, a timely evaluation helps protect their health. Cystitis in children is an inflammation of the bladder, usually due to a urinary tract infection, that causes discomfort when urinating and other symptoms characteristic of childhood.

Common symptoms: burning or pain when urinating, a need to urinate frequently, lower abdominal pain, fever and, in the youngest children, irritability or lack of appetite.

Common causes: it is usually due to bacteria entering the urinary tract; at times it is related to anatomical factors or hygiene habits.

Which specialist treats it? The pediatrician performs the initial evaluation and, depending on the case, may draw on the pediatric nephrologist or the urologist. In the presence of urinary symptoms or fever in a child, it is advisable to see a doctor without delay.
