Ischemic Colitis

Ischemic colitis occurs when the flow of blood to a part of the large intestine temporarily decreases, which inflames and injures the lining of the affected colon.

Common symptoms: abdominal pain, often on the left side, urgency to have a bowel movement, and the presence of blood in the stools.

When to see the doctor? In the case of intense abdominal pain accompanied by intestinal bleeding, it is advisable to seek prompt evaluation to determine the cause.

The gastroenterologist is in charge of studying the colon, the proctologist contributes to problems of the distal intestine, and the general surgeon is involved in selected cases; the general practitioner can guide the first consultation.
