Ventricular Septal Defect
A ventricular septal defect is a heart condition in which there is an opening in the wall that separates the two ventricles of the heart. That communication allows abnormal passage of blood between both chambers and is usually congenital in origin.
Common symptoms: in infants, fatigue during feeding, rapid breathing, and poor weight gain may be noticed; in some cases it is detected by a heart murmur.
When to seek care? When unusual tiredness, difficulty breathing, or poor growth is observed in the baby.
Which specialist treats it? The cardiologist, and in children the pediatric cardiologist, evaluate the structure of the heart; the cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon takes part in the cases that require it, and the pediatrician accompanies the follow-up. An early evaluation guides appropriate care.
