What does a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon do?

Together with other specialists, they assess which heart or chest problems require surgery and perform procedures to repair or correct these conditions.

Conditions they treat

In the heart, they address the aftereffects of a heart attack and heart failure, as well as defects such as ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defect, and valve problems such as mitral stenosis and acute mitral regurgitation. In the chest, they take part in the management of lung cancer and pneumothorax.

When is it considered?

Surgical evaluation usually arises when a cardiologist or pulmonologist detects a condition that might require an operation.
