Increased-Permeability Pulmonary Edema

Increased-permeability pulmonary edema is the buildup of fluid in the lungs that occurs when the small walls of the alveoli and vessels become more permeable, letting fluid pass into the space where there should be air. Unlike other types, it does not originate from a direct problem of the heart.

Common causes: It usually appears in the context of serious infections, inhalation of harmful substances, major trauma, or other situations that inflame the lung tissue.

Usual manifestations: Difficulty breathing that sets in rapidly predominates, along with labored breathing and a feeling of shortness of breath.
