Arterial Embolism

An arterial embolism occurs when a clot or other material travels through the bloodstream and suddenly blocks an artery, cutting off blood flow to an organ or a limb. It is an emergency that requires immediate care.

When should you seek care right away? Severe, sudden pain, paleness, coldness, tingling, or loss of strength in an arm or leg are warning signs that call for prompt attention.

Common causes: It often originates from heart problems, such as certain irregular rhythms, or from plaques that break loose from the arterial walls.

Which specialist treats it? Management usually involves angiology, vascular surgery, cardiology, or internal medicine, and in cardiac cases the cardiovascular surgeon. Given how suddenly it appears, the sensible course is to go to an emergency service and then follow up with the appropriate specialist.
