What does an angiologist do?

They evaluate blood flow through a physical exam and studies such as vascular ultrasound, distinguish whether the problem involves veins or arteries, and propose measures to protect circulation.

Conditions they treat

They frequently treat varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency, as well as deep vein thrombosis and clots in the legs. On the arterial side, they evaluate arterial insufficiency and peripheral vascular disease. They also follow up on diabetic foot and clotting disorders such as thrombophilia.

When to seek care

• Bulging veins, heaviness, or swelling in the legs.
• Pain when walking that improves with rest.
• Wounds that do not heal, especially in people with diabetes.
