Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease, also known by its English abbreviation (CHD), is a condition in which the arteries that carry blood to the heart become narrowed or hardened, generally due to a buildup of plaque on their walls. This reduces blood flow to the heart muscle.

Associated factors: It is usually related to high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities, diabetes, smoking, and lifestyle.

Common symptoms: It may present with pain or tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, or fatigue with exertion, although at times it progresses silently.

Which specialist treats it? The cardiologist is the one who evaluates the heart and its arteries; in situations that require intervention, the cardiovascular surgeon may be added. In the case of chest discomfort or difficulty breathing, seeking timely medical care is the most sensible thing.
