Constipation in Children

The doctor who treats constipation in children is usually the pediatrician, supported by the pediatric gastroenterologist when necessary. This condition is very common in childhood and refers to bowel movements that are infrequent, hard, or difficult to pass.

How it presents: spaced-out bowel movements, dry or bulky stools, pain during bowel movements, abdominal bloating, and, at times, the child avoids going to the bathroom.

Common causes: changes in diet, low intake of fluids or fiber, transitions such as toilet training or starting school.

When is it a good idea to consult? When the constipation is prolonged, causes pain, there is blood in the stools, or it affects the child's mood and appetite. If you notice that the problem persists despite care at home, a pediatric evaluation helps guide the most appropriate management.
