Hand Fracture

Before moving or straining an injured hand, it's helpful to know that a hand fracture is a break in one of the many bones that make it up, whether those in the back of the hand or those in the fingers. It is a common injury after blows, falls, or sports accidents.

Common symptoms: Pain, swelling, difficulty moving or closing the fingers, and sometimes deformity or bruising in the affected area.

When to seek care? If after a blow there is persistent pain, swelling, or limited movement, it's prudent to seek care to confirm the extent of the injury.

Which specialist treats it? The hand surgeon and the orthopedist are the ideal professionals to evaluate this type of fracture; in childhood the pediatric orthopedist is involved. A timely evaluation with the specialist helps the bones heal in the correct position and preserve the function of the hand.
