Rib Fractures

Rib fractures are breaks or cracks in one or more bones of the rib cage, generally caused by a blow, a fall, or trauma to the chest.

Common symptoms: Pain that increases when breathing deeply, coughing, or moving, as well as tenderness in the affected area.

When to see a doctor? Intense chest pain after a blow, difficulty breathing, or pain that does not ease requires an evaluation, since it is advisable to rule out involvement of nearby organs.

Which specialist treats it? The cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon evaluates injuries to the rib cage when there is suspicion of involvement of internal structures. After trauma to the chest with significant pain, the prudent action is to seek medical care.
