Disseminated Histoplasmosis
When an infection by the fungus that causes histoplasmosis spreads from the lungs to different organs, it is called disseminated histoplasmosis, a more extensive form of the disease.
Common causes: The infection occurs by inhaling spores from soils with bird or bat droppings; dissemination is more frequent when the immune system is weakened.
Common manifestations: Sustained fever, intense fatigue, weight loss, enlargement of the liver or spleen, and ulcers in the mouth, skin, or other areas may appear.
Which specialist treats it? The lung involvement falls to the pulmonologist and the skin lesions to the dermatologist, in collaboration with other physicians depending on the extent of the condition. In the presence of prolonged fever and general malaise that does not improve, it is sensible to seek a professional evaluation as soon as possible.
