Bronchitis

Inflammation of the bronchi, or bronchitis, is the irritation and swelling of the airways that carry air to the lungs, which makes the passage of air difficult and usually causes cough.

Frequent symptoms: Cough with or without phlegm, chest discomfort, wheezing when breathing and, at times, a sensation of fatigue.

Common causes: It is frequently associated with respiratory infections, although irritation from smoke or other environmental factors can also play a role.

Which specialist treats it? The pulmonologist and the general practitioner treat this condition; in children the pediatrician gets involved and, in intense acute episodes, the emergency physician. If the cough is prolonged or breathing is difficult, it is advisable to seek professional evaluation.
