Liver Failure

Liver failure is a condition in which the liver loses the ability to carry out its functions, such as clearing substances, producing proteins and taking part in digestion. It can set in gradually or appear more rapidly.

Warning signs: Possible manifestations include yellowish coloring of the skin and eyes, marked tiredness, swelling of the abdomen or legs, and confusion. These signs require attention without delay.

Common causes: It is usually related to sustained liver damage, liver infections and exposure to toxic substances, among other factors.

Who should you see? In the event of suspicion, it's advisable to first be evaluated by a general practitioner, who guides the initial workup and, if necessary, refers you to a liver disease specialist. Do not delay the consultation if these symptoms appear; a timely evaluation makes the difference.
