Laryngotracheitis

Laryngotracheitis is an inflammation of the larynx and trachea, common in childhood and usually associated with respiratory tract infections.

How it shows up: A harsh-sounding cough, hoarseness and, at times, a noise when breathing are characteristic; the symptoms usually worsen at night.

Common causes: Most cases have a viral origin, although cold or dry air can influence the discomfort.
