Constrictive Pericarditis

Constrictive pericarditis is a condition in which the pericardium, the membrane that surrounds the heart, becomes rigid and thickened, which limits the normal filling of the heart chambers. It usually develops gradually after a previous inflammation.

Common symptoms: Tiredness, shortness of breath with exertion, swelling in the legs or abdomen, and a feeling of fullness.

Common causes: It can arise after inflammations of the pericardium of various origins, although sometimes a precise cause is not identified.

The cardiologist, and in childhood the pediatric cardiologist, studies this condition; when necessary, the cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon or the general surgeon takes part. If you have persistent fatigue and swelling, evaluating it with one of these professionals allows a better understanding of what is happening.
