Cardiac Tumors

Cardiac tumors are abnormal growths of tissue that develop in the heart or in nearby structures. They can be benign or malignant, and originate in the heart itself or arrive from another part of the body.

Manifestations: Depending on their size and location, they may cause no symptoms or be associated with difficulty breathing, palpitations, fatigue, or other discomfort related to the functioning of the heart.

When to see a doctor? Persistent cardiac symptoms or findings on imaging tests warrant a detailed evaluation.

Which specialist treats it? The cardiologist is the go-to provider, along with the cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon when needed; in minors the pediatric cardiologist is involved. If there is a suspicion or a prior finding, seeing these specialists makes it possible to define the most appropriate workup and follow-up.
