Pressure Ulcers

The wound and circulation team is key to addressing pressure ulcers, lesions of the skin and tissues that appear when an area of the body bears sustained pressure, for example from lying down or sitting for a long time. They usually form over bony prominences such as the heels, hips, or lower back.

Signs to watch for:

• Redness that doesn't go away when the pressure is relieved.
• Damaged skin, blisters, or open sores.
• Pain or temperature changes in the area.

When should you seek care? Any lesion that doesn't improve or that grows deserves evaluation, especially in people with reduced mobility.

Which specialists are involved? The dermatologist and the general surgeon assess the skin and tissues, while the angiologist and the vascular surgeon address the circulation; the internist coordinates the overall care. A timely professional evaluation helps care for the skin and prevent complications.
