About the Doctor

My name is Juan Carlos Serna Ojeda. I am a physician and surgeon who graduated with honors from the Tec de Monterrey. During my training I had the opportunity to complete clinical rotations at hospitals affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX) and Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA). I specialized in ophthalmology, and subspecialized in cornea and refractive surgery in programs endorsed by the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). I hold a Master's in Medical Sciences, which I earned working with markers in corneal stem cells. I studied ocular surface at the LV Prasad Eye Institute (Hyderabad, India) and completed an observer internship at the Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild (Paris, France). I am certified by the Consejo Mexicano de Oftalmologia, by the International Council of Ophthalmology, and I hold a certification in lamellar corneal transplant from Apollo Hospitals (Hyderabad, India). I love research, and I am aware of how important it is to be able to offer patients the most current and effective care, which has allowed me to be the author of more than 15 chapters and more than 50 scientific publications in national and international books and journals (New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, etc.). My continuing education and work have allowed me to give oral presentations at the meetings of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, World Cornea Congress, and World Ophthalmology Congress. I am leading the first study to evaluate management trends and preferences in the treatment of patients with keratoconus in Latin America. I am the first author of the largest studies in the world of pediatric patients with anterior segment disease due to herpes simplex virus, and in corneal transplantation for the same disease, I described a new technique for treating dry eye, and I am the author of the study with the largest series of patients with corneal prosthesis outside the United States. I became the 12th ophthalmologist in the Americas to receive the prestigious Troutman-Veronneau Award from the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO), for my research on corneal stem cells, and I am also the first Latin American to win an ARVO/Alcon Early Career Clinician-Scientist Research Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, which is the most important international vision and ophthalmology research association. I was named Citizen of the Year by Aguascalientes, Mexico in 2018. My work is guided by ethics and human connection with my patients, as well as by seeking to offer the most current care in the management of eye diseases.
