Conjunctivitis

The ophthalmologist is the doctor who evaluates conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. It is a very common eye condition and, in general, follows a good course.

Common symptoms: redness of the eye, tearing, a gritty sensation, discharge and, depending on the cause, itching or sensitivity to light.

Common causes: it may originate from infections, from allergies, or from contact with irritant substances.

When should you consult a professional? If the redness is accompanied by significant pain, changes in vision, or abundant discharge, an evaluation is advisable. The optometrist and the general practitioner can also provide initial guidance; when in doubt, it is best to have a professional review the affected eye.
