Lung Collapse
When a portion of the lung or the entire lung loses air and deflates, we call it lung collapse, a situation in which the lung tissue stops expanding normally during breathing.
Common causes: It may be due to air entering the space surrounding the lung, to the blockage of an airway by mucus or foreign objects, or to pressure from fluid or masses inside the chest.
Frequent symptoms: Sudden difficulty breathing, chest pain, rapid breathing, and, in some cases, a bluish discoloration of the skin. The severity varies depending on how much of the lung is affected.
Which specialist treats it? The thoracic surgeon and the pulmonologist evaluate the lung and provide guidance about the causes. When shortness of breath comes on suddenly, it is best to seek care promptly for a professional evaluation.
