Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Follow-up of bronchopulmonary dysplasia is usually handled by the neonatologist and the pediatric pulmonologist, together with the pediatrician, because it is a respiratory condition that develops in newborns, most frequently in those born prematurely who required support to breathe.

What it is: It is a chronic disorder of lung development in which the tissue of the immature lung is affected, which can make oxygen exchange difficult during the first months of life.

Signs to watch for: Rapid or labored breathing, greater effort when feeding, and susceptibility to respiratory infections are usually reasons to maintain close medical monitoring.
