Empyema

Empyema is the accumulation of pus in a body cavity, most often in the space surrounding the lungs, usually as a result of an infection.

Common symptoms: it may present with fever, chest pain that increases with breathing, difficulty breathing, cough, and general malaise.

Which specialist treats it? The pulmonologist takes part in its evaluation, and when a chest procedure is needed the general surgeon and the cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon are involved.
