What it is: When these structures deteriorate, the lungs lose elasticity and it becomes hard for air to leave, which reduces breathing capacity.

Common symptoms: Shortness of breath that worsens with exertion, cough, and a feeling of fatigue when carrying out everyday activities.

Common causes: It is usually related to prolonged exposure to tobacco smoke or to environmental pollutants. When shortness of breath limits your activities, it is advisable to see a pulmonologist or, in critical situations, the specialist in intensive care medicine for an appropriate evaluation.
